Pixel advertising

The Impressionists probably saw this coming. Online billboard advertising has shrunk to the micro level, as if Claude Monet himself was dabbling in graphic design for 21st century companies. The pixel advertising craze continues to catch the eye of marketing specialists, as companies vie for ad space the size of this word.

With the right page selection, great ad location, and attractive landing page to greet clickers, advertising on pixel pages can be a very profitable move for your business.

You may have heard of pixel advertising from recent stories on CNBC or CNN, or in the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal. In less than six months, the market for micro ads has exploded out of nowhere.

Pixel advertising is the creation of Alex Tew, a 21 year old college student in the U.K. He created MillionDollarHomePage.com in August, 2005, in order to raise money for his education.

He dreamed up a grid of one million pixels, the tiny bits of light that make up the visible screen on a computer. Selling each 10x10 pixel block for $100 each, he aimed to raise one million dollars. Last month, he surpassed his goal, selling his last block for $38,100 on eBay.

Once the story of the remarkable growth of his improbable site hit the international media, hundreds of others created their own pixel pages. Although most pixel pages are just creative fundraisers for their owners and “me-Tew” copycats, many sites have developed a unique theme to stand apart.

CompanyBattleships.com uses the grid and the Milton Bradley game to promote its site. Local elementary school teacher David Robb has recently launched 1TeachersDream.com to raise money for five different charities.

What’s the Attraction?

Typically, advertisements are sold in 10x10 blocks, with space priced by the pixel. Each block however, is 100 pixels, so a $0.10 pixel page sells its blocks in multiples of $10. A visit at ThePixelWars.com reveals sites that fit any budget.

Pixel advertising can be very cost effective, especially compared to other forms of online advertising. Since your ad typically remains on the site for 1-5 years or more, your one time cost will be much less than advertising on typical Pay-Per-Click sites, such as Google, Yahoo, or Overture.

The disadvantages need to be considered, of course. On a new pixel site, your ad has great visibility, but once the page becomes more than 75% full, your small block is swamped by all the other ads. Also, your business may have a particular market; the general surfer who views that particular pixel page may not be of value to you.

Creating the Most Cost Effective Traffic

The best sites to advertise on are those that either have a theme related specifically to your industry, and/or are about 10-20% full. These latter sites have established a stable growth rate, while leaving enough room for your ad to be very visible as the site continues to gain more customers.

Also, look to see the current advertisers and restrictions on the site. Are these companies you want to share space with? Do the ads point mainly to other pixel pages, or established brick and mortar company websites? Does the site allow adult-themed sites that may conflict with your client base? Do you see your competitors, or are you the first of your industry on the site? Can you change your ad image and URL at a later time?

As for creating an effective ad, bigger is not always necessary. Colors and placement are the most important factors triggering high response rates. Use a bold symbol or word with contrasting colors to the neighboring ads.

Location is critical. On sites with very prominent ads that may have cost that advertiser $300 or more, take advantage of their eye magnetism and place your smaller ad next to that ad. In some cases, you can “merge” your ad with the larger ad, matching colors and adding a word of your own.

But more often, successful ads have opposite color schemes, and are placed immediately to the right or bottom right of the larger ad. This location is where the typical reader’s eyes will fall after looking at the larger ad.

On a clean site, place your ad on the top row, just underneath the menu link that you believe would be clicked on the most (usually Buy Pixels or FAQ). If this area is taken, work your way around the page in a clockwise fashion to find the best location, as this is the general pattern of most viewers’ vision on a computer screen.

A Fad or a Stable Trend?

Critics point to the quick start and the end of Alex Tew’s campaign as a sign that pixel advertising should be written off as a passing fad. However, the next phase of pixel advertising is not in the form of stand alone pixel pages, but small banner pixel ads. Also, pixel advertising has hit network marketing with startup companies like PixMeUp.

For small, growing businesses, pixel pages are a novel and affordable advertising method. For larger companies, they are a way to stay trendy with the “now” crowd.

The bottom line? Whether a fad or a long term trend, pixel advertising should be a consideration for your 2006 ad budget.´

Network Marketing: How Sharp Is Your Axe?

In his book, "Super Prospecting: Special Offers and Quick-start Systems", Tom "Big Al" Schreiter tells the story of an old lumberjack who observed a young lumberjack laboring to chop down a tree. After watching the youngster work himself to nearly exhaustion without accomplishing much, the old man said, "Looks to me like it'd be easier if you sharpened the axe."

To which the younger man replied before returning to his attack on the tree, "I don't have time to sharpen the axe, I have to get this tree cut down."

Now, it seems obvious to most of us that a sharp axe would probably make the work go faster and easier. The young lumberjack would be able to cut down more trees with less work just by taking a few minutes to sharpen his axe. Prepare his tools. Learn his trade, you might say!

You know, it's funny. Most of us have no problem seeing the point of that story, but everyday, people sign up for network marketing programs and then start hacking away with very blunt axes! Most of these folks have no idea of what network marketing is, how to go about it, or how to measure success.

I recently received an email from a gentleman interested in getting into network marketing. He asked some very insightful questions, but one demonstrated his misunderstanding of most genuine network marketing programs.

He asked, if I remember correctly, how long it would take to make a significant income from a certain network marketing program, and seemed to indicate that he would expect a sucessful program to generate an income of about $48,000 or more within a relatively short period of time. Otherwise, he would consider it a scam.

Well, honestly, I guess my two friends who I often hold up as examples somehow missed that point. It took each of them about three years in perfectly legitimate programs to begin making money anything like what my correspondent expected. At that point, by the way, their incomes began to grow exponentially until they were taking home over $100,000.00 a month.

We'll say nothing about countless Avon ladies who are network marketers who consider themselves successfully affiliated with an honest company but whose income is less than $20,000.00 a year.

Or, I guess I should be concerned about my affiliation with a nationally recognized company (you've probably seen their commercials on prime time). The first year, I only made a few hundred dollars. The second year a few thousand.

I'm in my fifth year with them, and I am now making the magical number...a six figure income from that program alone. I presently have over 200 fully satisfied customers and tons of repeat business. What a scam!

I don't mean to insult the gentleman who sent me the question. His questions were valid, and I understand his concerns and applaud his attempt to gain some insight into network marketing. However, it appears his understanding of network marketing is limited to a desire to find a program that will in some way do the work for him...make income for him.

Unfortunately, network marketing is a business...albeit a special kind of business...and it works best when worked certain ways. Many successful network marketers have written many excellent books and articles on the subject, and there are marketing and internet marketing training programs available for those who wish to learn. Some colleges are even offering courses and classes on network marketing and internet marketing.

People going into network marketing should be doing more than simply listening to the person who recruits them and scanning the company literature. If they were hired to do any job they had never done before, no matter how menial, they would recognize the need to familiarize themselves with the business and how it is conducted. Especially if they intended to rise in the business and succeed.

A few books the beginning network marketer might want to read are:

These tend to be a little old but can probably be found thru Amazon.com, and they are excellent education for the beginning network marketer.

The person who fails to educate himself or herself about network marketing in general and their chosen business in particular, has chosen to fail. Like the young lumberjack, they will flail at the tree until their strength or motivation fails them, and then they will wander into the forest...perhaps complaining loudly about trees, axes, lumberjacks...anything but themselves. They will not know why they failed, how they could have succeeded, or how to measure success.

Their axes will be dull, indeed.

Say for you are taking the job of online promotion at home, but you don’t meet the deadline. In this case you might loose your money and someone else will bag that job.

A decision to start a work at home (a home business) just as a rebellion against your boss or for more monetary benefits is not worthwhile. No doubt, there is freedom, fun and financial benefits in home businesses, but the condition is that your creative self should be interested in that job.

Never be moved by the tall claims of ‘Making millions’ without doing anything. Plan for a successful home based business based on your experience, expertise and resources. Only then you will be able to turn your hobby/expertise into dollars.

Inside Story of ‘Work at Home’

Well, you can put your talent work for you, but as per clients’ specifications if your work is something like medical billing or any type of business processing. Sales is a different ball game altogether. Irrespective of the nature of your business, it’s always better to work under a perfect mentor.

Ideas alone do not make anything. It’s people who make things happen. Suppose you planned a robust system of online direct marketing where you don’t need to do the marketing, your system does everything for you. Even then you have to manage the system and check/reply the leads.

So, a decision to start a home business by superficial motivation might make you worse off. That home business is worth considering where you have a track record so that you can evaluate and investigate and evaluate.

Remember, 90% of work at home based businesses are pure gimmicks, outright scams. First, check the authenticity of the source, credibility of the opposite party before taking any job online.
